War memorial dinner warms up Antarctic science conference

Written by

As the SCAR conference continues to inspire and initiate international discussions and collaborations in Antarctic Research, the social programme kicked into gear with the Open Science dinner.

Held at the Auckland War Memorial Museum tonight, delegates enjoyed a delicious three-course meal with beer/wine. Being on the top floor, we also had a fantastic view of Auckland's skyline at night.

We applauded as recipients for various SCAR achievements received their awards: Tim Naish for the Martha T. Muse Prize, the SCAR medal for Excellence in Antarctic Research went to Steven Chown, and the SCAR Medal for International Scientific Coordination was jointly-awarded to Mahlon "Chuck" Kennicutt and Rasik Ravindra.

Both Sharon and Diana gave excellent talks in their conference session at Sky City preceeding the dinner initiating some good questions and discussions. After our big professional and social day all of us were very keen to head back to our apartment for much-needed rest to prepare us for tomorrow, the last day of this conference.
